Real-World Experience, Built In
Every cadet at Cal Poly Maritime Academy gains hands-on experience as part of their degree. For license-track majors, that means sea terms aboard commercial vessels and the Training Ship Golden Bear. For non-license majors, it means completing a required summer internship after two or three years of coursework. Whether at sea or in the office, these experiences connect your classroom learning to the real world—and set you up for success after graduation.
Experience = Career Advantage
Whether you're training aboard a ship, working in a global port or participating in international programs, hands-on experience is built into your journey. These real-world opportunities develop your skills, broaden your perspective and give you an edge in the job market right from the start.
Summer One: The Training Ship
Your journey at sea starts here. Work alongside classmates to operate and maintain a 500-foot vessel, applying what you've learned in navigation, engineering and shipboard systems while exploring the Pacific Rim.
Summer Two: Industry Internships
Join a professional crew aboard a containership, tanker, tug or cruise ship. These internships offer hands-on experience, real industry insight and often lead to job offers from top maritime employers
Summer Three: Back On The TSGB
Return to the Training Ship Golden Bear for your final voyage. This experience solidifies and hones your skills and prepares you to take charge in your final year and throughout your career
International Experience Program
For students in non-licensed majors, the International Experience Program offers immersive global learning. Past cohorts have explored more than 20 countries across four continents, gaining firsthand insight into international business, culture and policy.
Study Abroad Opportunities
Live and learn overseas while earning credit through semester-long or summer programs offered by Cal Poly and CSU. Explore new cultures, expand your perspective and bring a global edge to your education.
