Corps of Cadets

Accelerate Your Leadership

At Cal Poly Maritime Academy, the Corps of Cadets isn’t about marching in line—it’s about stepping up. For nearly a century, this student-led program has shaped leaders through shared purpose, structure and real responsibility. Cadets work as a team, learn to lead by doing and build the confidence to thrive in high-stakes roles across industries. Today’s Corps is a launchpad for personal and professional growth and is open to all students who want to lead.

What It Means to Be a Cadet

Cadets aren’t just students—they’re part of a crew. Every undergraduate in a license-track major is enrolled in the Corps, and any student can choose to join. Through uniformed service, shared routines and mentorship, cadets gain the discipline, resilience and leadership skills to navigate real-world challenges. It’s a commitment, but one that shapes character, builds community and prepares students for what’s next.

Open to All

All new students in license-track majors are automatically enrolled in the Corps of Cadets, which is a key part of their professional training and leadership development. But any student regardless of major is welcome and encouraged to join. It’s an opportunity to grow as a leader, gain structure and discipline and be part of a close-knit community.

Leadership in Action

The Corps is a student-led environment built to prepare cadets for real-world leadership. Cadets can apply for formal leadership roles and hands-on management positions with real responsibilities aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear and on campus. Through accountability, teamwork and mentoring, students develop the confidence and skills to lead in high-stakes environments.

Cadet Life

Life in the Corps is built on positive structure, service and camaraderie. Cadets wear uniforms, participate in formations and take turns standing watch on campus and at sea. These shared duties create rhythm and accountability while reinforcing leadership, professionalism and personal growth. Every aspect of Corps life supports your development as a leader.

Learn by Doing at Sea

Leadership isn’t something you only study here—it’s something you live. From training missions aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear to watch rotations and peer mentoring, the Corps puts students in real situations with real responsibility. It’s leadership under pressure, with encouragement and support every step of the way.
