Students at Cal Poly Maritime Academy are finding plenty of opportunities to take Learn by Doing beyond the classroom.

The Cal Poly Maritime Academy SCUBA Club recently traveled to Lake Tahoe for its first club trip, giving students the opportunity to explore one of California’s most distinctive and beautiful recreational environments while strengthening their diving skills, confidence and teamwork.

On Sept. 12, students completed three dives at Meeks Bay, where they explored the underwater environment and observed local crayfish. The following day, the club dove at Hurricane Bay, where students visited the 30-foot sunken sailboat SS Alley Cat.

Students also put environmental stewardship into practice by removing several pounds of trash from beneath the lake’s surface.

The trip is one example of the recreational and student-life opportunities available to students on Cal Poly’s Solano Campus.

The campus provides access to the San Francisco Bay Area and some of Northern California’s best outdoor recreation, while student clubs offer opportunities to explore those surroundings with classmates.

The trip was made possible with support from Cal Poly, Cal Poly Associated Students Inc. and Solano Campus leadership.
