Underway Training Begins

A student on TS Golden Bear as it approaches Guam
Written By Madalyn Reynolds, Assistant Purser, and Jessica Fowler, Purser

Ahoy!

Following our departure from Guam on June 8th, TS Golden Bear commenced Underway Training (UWT) - an annual tradition that takes place during the second half of Sea Term.

We decided to get UWT finished a bit earlier this year. We had an opportunity to complete this between our Guam and Saipan port visits and we determined that Guam was the perfect place due to weather and other factors.

While the 1C Cadets cycled through their Underway Training rotations - primarily rubber docking and Fast Rescue Boat (FRB) certification, others continued to complete daywork projects and classroom rotations, and stand watch.

The weather was hot and sunny, perfect conditions for painting!

Engineers stayed busy with classroom projects like dismantling a purifier, pictured above.

1C Engineers and Deckies collaborate to successfully dock the ship at the rubber buoy. This is a fun opportunity for cadets to test their skill.

For those who are curious about our route for UWT, this is our recorded track as shown on the ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System).

One of the more fun aspects of Underway Training is the FRB certification process. 1C Deckies get to take the FRB out with an instructor to demonstrate their knowledge and get continued hands-on practice with operating the boat.

Fair winds and following seas...
