1940-1943
World War II brought major changes
In 1940, with war looming, the Academy was relocated to San Francisco while the training ship was housed at Pier 54, then moved to the Ferry Building, with no permanent home. Just prior to the start of World War II, the course of study accelerated from three-years to 17 months. Many graduates served in the war, some becoming POWs and 11 dying in the line of duty. In the midst of this war effort, a new permanent home for the academy was established in 1943 on a 67-acre site at Morrow Cove in Vallejo.
